Mary Hinds admitted at her first Board meeting with the Northern Trust the the new A&E will not solve the crisis facing Antrim Hospital.

"Mary Hinds & Paul Cummings sat in their first board meeting within the Northern Health & Social Care Trust on 25/5/2013.

Despite Mary Hinds being the led review in the Rutter & Hinds report into Antrim Hospital In 2012, she failed in her first role of public engagement after she was shielded from answering questions by acting Chairman Bob McCann" Save The Mid

In an attempt to justify her position to the Trust at Trust Board Una Cunning, Director of Primary and Community Care for Older People’s Services and Executive Director of Nursing  NHSCT,  stated to the Trust Board that no one was upset with the plans to close the 10 residential homes within the Northern Helath & Social Care Trust.
"Considering the way in that Una Cunning portrayed the potential closure of the residential homes to the Trust board, Save The Mid believe that Una Cunning should be barred from any further input in Residential Home reconfiguration & That he role as Director within the Trust in this be subject to investigation by the Health Minister  Save The Mid

Over 1,600 Deaths In Northern Ireland A&E's Since 2009

Ever contracting, under staffed with dangerously low capacity within the  A&E service in Northern Ireland, is this leading to more deaths inside A&E ?.

In March 2012 a elderly patient died un-noticed on a trolley in the Royal Victoria Hospital, the patient was found by ambulance crews who arrived to move him to a different unit. 6 months later in October 2012 another man died in Antrim Area A&E after waiting 22 and a half hours to be admitted from the A&E into a ward.

More recently we have seen the death of a 3 month old baby who arrived at Antrim Area A&E, the child and its mother spent half an hour in the waiting room waiting for medical care, by the time that help came it was too late and the baby died after being transferred to the Royal.

In a meeting after this incident attended by Save The Mid's Hugh McCloy with a off duty member of staff who witnessed this incident, Margret O'Hagan acute director in the Northern Health & Social Care Trust stated that if it was any consolation the baby would of not lived anyway. Despite this the Acute Director was not willing to admit that the system failed, regardless if the child had lived or died there was a serious failing inside the A&E that was directly related to over crowding and capacity issues and not just the medical condition of the baby.

Edwin Poots A&E Performance Is Worse than Michael McGimpsey

5/22/2013

While the focus on A&E's seems to direct itself on those patients who are waiting over 12 hours, there are also worrying trends that more people than ever are waiting over 4 hours for treatment. Albeit these patients are not waiting 12 hours plus they are waiting between 4-12 hours, the exact breakdown is not released by the DHSSPS. Save The Mid feel that the 4-12 hour bracket is to large an interval for statistical analysis and the DHSSPS should show more detailed performance reports.

These figures are based on the first quarter of each year since 2008.

Patients seen in under 4 hours has dropped 18% since 2008

"It is inevitable that as a result of increased growth in our population the demand for  services will continue to rise and so we have to be innovative, adopt proven best practice  in terms of service delivery and work more closely than ever with primary care colleagues,  other statutory agencies, independent providers and with service users to ensure we  optimise our health and well being potential, and use our resources effectively. Our local
Population Plan sets out how we intend to reshape services so that not only do we bring  services as close as possible to a home setting and improve patient experience but also  create the capacity and resources to cope with growing demand, responding to that  demand in new ways and preventative ways, and delivering services within the finances  available."
