Edwin Poots £7 million White Elephant Investment Strategy Failed to Improve Antrim Area A&E Performance, Proving Former Chairman Jim Stewart was correct to speak out.
Despite extra nurses, extra consultants and all this extra money the performance is getting worse. Just shows that everything Jim Stewart said was correct. Poots cannot accept he is wrong. Nurses and doctors are being put under extreme stress working in an A/E department. The same information is now emerging from England.
However within this question it proves that none of the investments directly aided A&E performance and had a large focus on community services, the only staffing investment post Dec 2012 was £22,000 for 2 band 2 nurses. Indeed the funding is tipping on the actual problem with Antrim, its capacity. Instead of boosting capacity and staff within the Hospital to the standards that are required, Edwin Poots tired to bolster community services to get people out of hospital faster.
"With over 3,000 patients being readmitted to Antrim Hospital as emergency cases within 30 days of discharge over the space of a year, the question is are these people being discharged because they are better or to make room.?" Save The Mid
These issues are also compounding staff within the Trust, in a recent Human Resources report from the NHSCT it showed that there were 951
Psychosocial interventions for staff, 46% of which were due to stressful work schedule.
"181 NHSCT staff have attended Occupational Health for work related stress due to Stressful work schedule" Save The Mid
Summary
According to the Health Minister there is now a 6 month period in where the future of Causeway Hospital will be considered, with performances like this there should be no question that the Causeway Hospital should remain and that more emergency services are introduced to the Northern Trust area, with the Mid Ulster Hospital topping the list of facilities to be enhanced.
